Electron-phonon dynamics in an ensemble of nearly isolated nanoparticles

چکیده
We investigate the electron population dynamics in an ensemble of nearly isolated insulating nanoparticles, each nanoparticle modeled as an electronic two-level system coupled to a single vibrational mode. We find that at short times the ensemble-averaged excited-state population oscillates but has a decaying envelope. At long times, the oscillations become purely sinusoidal about a ‘‘plateau’’ population, with a frequency determined by the electron-phonon interaction strength and with an envelope that decays algebraically as t. We use this theory to predict electron-phonon dynamics in an ensemble of Y2O3 :Eu 31 nanoparticles.

Theory of electron–phonon dynamics in insulating nanoparticles
We discuss the rich vibrational dynamics of nanometer-scale semiconducting and insulating crystals as probed by localized electronic impurity states, with an emphasis on nanoparticles that are only weakly coupled to their environment. Two principal regimes of electron–phonon dynamics are distinguished, and a brief survey of vibrationalmode broadening mechanisms is presented. Recent work on the ...
متن کاملElectron dynamics in gold and gold–silver alloy nanoparticles: The influence of a nonequilibrium electron distribution and the size dependence of the electron–phonon relaxation
Electron dynamics in gold nanoparticles with an average diameter between 9 and 48 nm have been studied by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Following the plasmon bleach recovery after low power excitation indicates that a non-Fermi electron distribution thermalizes by electron– electron relaxation on a time scale of 500 fs to a Fermi distribution. This effect is only observed at lo...
متن کاملEffect of the Lattice Crystallinity on the Electron−Phonon Relaxation Rates in Gold Nanoparticles
In order to study the importance of surface phonons on the electron-phonon relaxation in plasmonic nanoparticles, the effect of size, shape, and materials have recently been studied. Gold and silver nanoparticles have shown no dependence on size and shape while copper nanoparticles have shown some size dependence. This suggests that the bulk phonons, which are sensitive to the bulk-phase struct...
متن کاملUltrafast magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic materials
In recent magneto optical experiments (TR-MOKE) the timescale of laser induced demagnetization was found to be shorter than 0.5 ps. However, doubts have been raised if the measured signal reflects genuine loss of magnetic moment at all. Also, for these experiments no broadly accepted theory exists. Although a few models are able to fit the data, they generally have in common that they violate o...
متن کاملHeterobarrier for converting hot-phonon energy to electric potential
We show that hot phonons emitted in energy conversion or resistive processes can be converted to electric potential in heterobarrier structures. Using phonon and electron interaction kinetics and self-consistent ensemble Monte Carlo, we find the favorable conditions for unassisted absorption of hot phonons and design graded heterobarriers for their direct conversion into electric energy. Tandem...
